FAQ

How many cameras do you have?

Too many!!

What camera do you use?

At the moment my main camera is a Minolta SRT-101 from Japan built in the late 1960’s. It’s fully mechanical and operates without a battery which I really like about it. I also have a few other film cameras, a Canon AE-1 that I need to get fixed, a Kodak Brownie Reflex, a Minolta Weathermatic-A waterproof camera.

Can you explain your pricing?

While my prints are all darkroom prints of film photographs I’ve taken meaning this is a labor intensive process with various different chemical processes and specialised equipment I really want to keep them as affordable as possible.

What is darkroom printing?

Light passing through a developed film negative then through a focusing lens onto a piece of chemically treated photosensitive paper then that paper is washed in 3 different chemical baths to develop, stop the development and then fix the print to the paper before washing the print in water. This is a fully manual process that relies on precise timing and must be done in complete darkness (Hence the darkroom) as any light other than the focused image will make the paper all go black and be unusable.

There’s a picture I’d like to buy but it’s not in stock. What can I do?

If a picture you want is out of stock please email me at outofstock@banksiaprints.com this will let me know that I need to print some more of that picture and will add it to the list for the next time I am printing which is usually not less than once a month. With as many pictures as I have taken it’s infeasible for me to keep them all in stock all the time so I try to keep the stock rotating through all the pictures I have uploaded.

What is a Bankisa?

It’s a type of tree found in Australia, famous for its seed pods that have been the origin of the banksia men in Australian folklore and the antagonists in a popular children’s book series “Snugglepot and Cuddlepie” by May Gibbs.
